For centuries, life in Old Raahe has followed the changing seasons of the Bothnian Bay. In summer, the sea connects the town with its islands and the open water beyond. Winter transforms that same landscape.
As temperatures fall and conditions allow, the sea freezes. Islands become surrounded by ice and snow, boats disappear from the water and an entirely different way of moving through the landscape begins. For the people who have lived along this coast for generations, this transformation has never simply meant the arrival of winter.
It has meant learning to live with the sea in all its seasons.
Winter by the Sea takes you into that landscape.
INTO THE ARCHIPELAGO
Leave the Town Behind
Your journey begins at Lang Resort, where you meet your local guide before heading towards the coast. From there, a snowmobile pulls your sleigh through the winter landscape towards the sheltered islands of the Raahe archipelago.
The journey takes approximately 20–30 minutes each way.
Gradually, the town is left behind.
Around you are snow, islands, winter sky and the frozen Bothnian Bay.
And then it is time to step out onto the ice.

Step onto the frozen Bothnian Bay and experience the extraordinary openness and silence of Finland’s northern coast in winter.
Your guide introduces you to the landscape and explains how people have learned to live with the changing sea for generations.
THE TRADITION
Try Ice Fishing
When ice and weather conditions allow, try one of Finland’s traditional winter pastimes.
Ice fishing is wonderfully simple: a small opening in the ice, a fishing line and patience.
Whether a fish appears is another matter.
And that, too, is part of the tradition.
THE FIRE
Warm Up by the Flames
After time on the ice, gather around an open fire.
Coffee is prepared in a traditional pot over the flames and served with a freshly baked Finnish sweet bun.
Warm your hands around the cup and listen to stories of the sea, the islands and life on Finland’s northern coast.
In winter, the sea does not disappear.
It becomes a different world.
LIFE BY THE BOTHNIAN BAY
A Different Side of Finnish Winter
Finnish winter is often imagined as deep forests and the landscapes of Lapland.
Here on the northern coast, winter has another character.
The sea freezes. Islands become part of a vast white landscape. Fishing traditions change with the season and people find new ways to travel, work and spend time outdoors.
The archipelago that is explored by boat in summer becomes a completely different world in winter.
Winter by the Sea offers a glimpse into this coastal way of life – one shaped not only by snow and cold, but by a relationship with the sea that has continued for generations.

Dress for the Experience
Northern winter is best enjoyed when you are warm.
Dress in layers and make sure your hands, feet and head are well protected. Don’t worry about looking elegant on the ice – in Finland, dressing properly for the weather is considered very sensible indeed.
And after spending time in the cold, coffee beside an open fire tastes particularly good.
