FINNISH SAUNA CULTURE

Before There Were Modern Bathrooms, There Was the Sauna

For generations of Finns, the sauna was much more than a warm room.

It was a place to wash, rest, talk, be quiet and spend time together.

Water was carried in by hand. The sauna was heated with wood. Warm washing water was mixed in a tub and poured over the body with a ladle.

There was no need for anything more.

In the historic courtyard of Captain Himanka, much of that simplicity remains.

Captain’s Sauna invites you to slow down and experience Finnish sauna much as generations before us did.

INSIDE CAPTAIN’S SAUNA

Wood, Water and Gentle Steam

The experience begins with an introduction to Finnish sauna culture and the simple customs that help you feel at home in the sauna.

Then the pace changes.

The wood-heated stove holds approximately 400 kilograms of stones, creating the soft, gentle steam – löyly – that is at the heart of a Finnish sauna.

Settle onto the wide handcrafted aspen benches.

Add water to the hot stones.

Feel the steam rise.

Stay for as long as it feels comfortable.

Then step into the lounge, cool down, have a drink and return when you are ready.

There is no programme to complete.

The rhythm of the sauna is yours.

THE HEAT

Discover the Meaning of Löyly

A Finnish sauna is defined by its steam.

When water is thrown onto the hot stones, warmth and moisture fill the room. Finns call this löyly.

At Captain’s Sauna, approximately 400 kilograms of stones create a deep, gentle heat that builds slowly rather than demanding endurance.

Good löyly is something Finns take seriously.

Once you experience it, you may understand why.

THE WATER

Wash the Traditional Way

There is no running water inside Captain’s Sauna.

And that is entirely intentional.

Water is carried into the sauna and mixed by hand to a comfortable temperature. Washing is simple: warm water, a ladle and a basin.

What might at first seem unusual soon becomes one of the most memorable parts of the experience.

It connects a simple everyday ritual with centuries of Finnish life.

THE PAUSE

Take Your Time

Sauna is not meant to be rushed.

Between sessions, move into the traditional lounge, have something to drink and spend time together.

Talk if you feel like talking.

Sit quietly if you don’t.

Then return to the warmth when you are ready.

This rhythm of sauna, cooling down and returning is as important as the heat itself.

No running water. No complicated rituals.

Just wood, water, steam and time.

SAUNA BEFORE MODERN LIFE

Simple by Design

Today, Finnish saunas can be found in modern homes, hotels and even city apartments.

But the tradition is much older.

For generations, wood was carried to the stove and water to the sauna. Washing happened with water warmed and mixed by hand. Families took turns in the heat and rested between sauna sessions.

Captain’s Sauna preserves something of this older rhythm.

Not as a museum reconstruction.

Not as a performance.

But as a sauna that is still heated, used and enjoyed in much the same way.

This is living heritage at its simplest.

A SAUNA WITH A STORY

In the Courtyard of Captain Himanka

Captain’s Sauna stands in the historic courtyard of Captain Himanka in Old Raahe, beside Langin Kauppahuone.

It belongs to a town whose life was shaped for centuries by merchants, ships and the sea.

Behind the façades of Old Raahe, courtyards were the practical heart of everyday life. Here stood the smaller buildings needed for the household – and among them, the sauna.

Experiencing sauna here connects one of Finland’s oldest everyday traditions with the historic world of the merchant town surrounding it.

A TIP FROM THE HOUSE OF LANG

Don’t Watch the Clock

Finns rarely decide that a sauna session should last exactly ten or fifteen minutes.

Stay while it feels good.

Step out when you want to cool down.

Have a drink.

Then go back in.

The best way to experience a Finnish sauna is not to ask how long you should stay.

Ask yourself when you feel ready to return.
