There was a time when the streets of Raahe were filled with sailors, merchants, craftsmen and travellers arriving from distant ports.
The sea connected this small northern town to a much larger world.
Ships sailed from Raahe carrying goods across the Baltic and beyond. Merchant families built businesses and homes here. Sailors brought back stories, objects and influences from their journeys.
And around the harbour grew a community whose everyday life was shaped by the sea.
Much of that town still exists.

THROUGH OLD RAAHE
Follow the Streets to the Sea
Your journey begins at Langin Kauppahuone in the heart of Old Raahe.
From here, your guide leads you through the streets of one of Finland’s best-preserved historic wooden towns.
But this is more than a walk between old buildings.
Along the way, houses become homes, streets become places of business and familiar corners reveal stories of merchants, sailors, shipowners and craftsmen.
You will discover how maritime trade brought prosperity and international connections to Raahe – and how the sea shaped everything from work and architecture to family life and local culture.
THE STREETS
Walk Through a Living Wooden Town
Old Raahe is not an open-air museum. People still live and work among its historic wooden houses, courtyards and streets.
Walking through the town allows you to experience its scale as generations before you did – on foot, house by house and street by street.
The historic town becomes easier to understand when you move through it.
THE SEA
Discover a Town Built on Maritime Trade
Raahe’s story cannot be understood without the sea.
During the age of sail, ships connected the town with ports across Europe and beyond. Maritime trade created fortunes, supported craftsmen and sailors and brought international influences into this northern community.
Your guide brings this world to life through stories of ships, trade, tar, merchants and the people whose livelihoods depended on the sea.
THE MERCHANT’S HOME
Step Inside the World of a Shipowner
The journey continues inside Sovelius House, one of Finland’s finest preserved nineteenth-century merchant homes.
Its historic interiors offer something the streets alone cannot:
a glimpse into private life.
Here, you can see how a prosperous shipowner’s family lived and how wealth, international trade and local traditions found their way into the rooms of a northern Finnish home.
The houses remain. The streets remain.
And so do many of their stories.
THE AGE OF SAIL
A Small Town Connected to a Wider World
From today’s perspective, Old Raahe can feel peaceful and secluded.
Two centuries ago, it was anything but isolated.
Ships carried goods between Raahe and distant ports. Tar and other products from the surrounding region travelled out into the world, while new goods, ideas and influences arrived in return.
Behind this trade were people.
Shipowners invested in vessels. Merchants managed businesses and households. Sailors spent months or years away from home. Craftsmen supplied ships and the growing town.
Their stories are still written into Old Raahe’s streets and houses.
You only need to know where to look.
MORE THAN OLD BUILDINGS
A Town That Still Lives
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Old Raahe is that its history has not been separated from everyday life.
The wooden town is still a neighbourhood.
Historic houses remain homes, businesses and places where people gather. The old street plan continues to guide daily life through the town.
That makes walking through Old Raahe fundamentally different from visiting a reconstructed historical environment.
You are walking through the same town.
The purpose of this experience is to help you see what is already there.
A TIP FROM THE HOUSE OF LANG
Look Beyond the Façades
When walking through Old Raahe, don’t look only at the grandest houses.
Notice the gates, courtyards, outbuildings and smaller wooden homes between them.
A merchant town was never made up of merchants alone.
Sailors, craftsmen, servants, shopkeepers and families all shared these streets – and their stories are part of Old Raahe too.
