For generations, people in the North have looked up at the winter sky and wondered.
Sometimes it remains dark and still.
And sometimes, without warning, something begins to move.
A faint glow appears.
It grows.
And suddenly the sky itself seems alive.
Today we understand the science behind the aurora borealis. But knowing how the northern lights are created has not taken away their mystery.
Perhaps that is why we still go outside into the darkness and wait.
Chasing the Northern Lights is about that search.
IN SEARCH OF THE AURORA
Follow the Conditions, Not a Fixed Route
There is no single place where the northern lights perform on command.
Every evening is different.
Your local guide follows the weather, cloud cover and aurora forecasts and chooses the route according to the conditions of the night.
Sometimes the search may begin on foot in and around Old Raahe.
On other evenings, you may travel by vehicle towards darker coastal or countryside locations where the sky opens above you.
Then we look up.
And wait.
Along the way, your guide shares stories about the aurora, explains the natural phenomenon behind it and introduces some of the beliefs the mysterious lights have inspired across generations.

Part of the excitement lies in not knowing exactly where the evening will take you.
Your guide reads the conditions and searches for open skies, darkness and the best available opportunities to see the aurora.
The destination may change.
The reason for going does not.
We are following the sky.

When the Sky Needed an Explanation
Long before science could explain the aurora borealis, people created their own explanations for the strange lights above them.
Across the North, the aurora became part of stories, beliefs and folklore.

And no guide can tell the aurora when to appear.
That uncertainty is part of what makes seeing it unforgettable.
We cannot promise the northern lights.
We can take you into the northern night to look for them.
FOLKLORE & SCIENCE
From Ancient Stories to Solar Winds
The northern lights have always invited explanations.
Finnish folklore gave them stories and meanings long before anyone understood the physical forces behind the phenomenon.
Today, we know that the aurora begins far beyond the Finnish coast, with activity from the Sun and charged particles interacting with the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere.
But stand outside on a dark northern night and the scientific explanation does not make the experience feel any less extraordinary.
During the excursion, your guide brings these two ways of understanding the aurora together:
what people once imagined – and what we know today.

Please dress warmly for winter conditions. Much of the experience may be spent outdoors and standing still while watching the sky.
A NATURAL PHENOMENON
Will We See the Northern Lights?
We hope so – and we do everything we reasonably can to find the best available conditions.
But the northern lights are a natural phenomenon and a sighting can never be guaranteed.
Your guide monitors aurora forecasts, cloud cover and local weather conditions and adapts the route accordingly.
If conditions are unsuitable, the excursion may be rescheduled or cancelled.
Even when the aurora remains hidden, the excursion offers something that is always there:
the experience of the northern night itself.
