Meet the Old Gentleman
He is made of leather.
He dates from the eighteenth century.
Nobody knows exactly who made him.
And somehow, against all odds, he survived.
Known affectionately as Wanha Herra – the Old Gentleman, this remarkable eighteenth-century leather diving suit is the world’s oldest surviving diving suit.
Long before modern diving equipment, someone designed a way for a person to descend beneath the surface of the sea.
The result looks extraordinary today.
But behind its unusual appearance lies something timeless:
human curiosity and the desire to solve a problem.

The suit survived partly because someone understood that it was worth preserving.
Captain Johan Leufstadius donated the Old Gentleman to the museum collection in the nineteenth century.
His connection adds another layer to the story – linking this unusual invention with Raahe’s generations of captains, sailors and people whose lives depended on the sea.

Your guided tour through the Crown Granary Museum takes you further into the history of Raahe – from the area’s earliest inhabitants to the rise of a town whose fortunes became closely connected with ships, trade and the sea.
During the age of sail, vessels from Raahe travelled far beyond the Bothnian Bay.
Shipowners invested in fleets.
Captains navigated international waters.
Sailors brought stories and influences home.
Industries developed around maritime trade.
A small town on Finland’s northern coast became connected to a much wider world.
The museum’s collections reveal the people, objects and ideas behind that story.
BEFORE OLD RAAHE
A Much Longer Story
The story of this coast did not begin with sailing ships.
The museum also reaches further into the past, introducing traces of prehistoric settlement and the mysterious structures and objects left by people who lived along the northern coast long before the town of Raahe existed.
This gives the visit an unusually long perspective:
people have adapted to this changing northern landscape for generations.
Eventually came the town.
Then merchants and ships.

A DIVING TRADITION THAT LIVES ON
Meet His Younger Brother
The original Old Gentleman is now safely preserved at the museum, but his story does not end behind the glass.
Around thirty years ago, an exact working replica was created using the same materials and traditional methods as the original.
Known as the Young Gentleman, the replica still takes to the water once a year during Raahe Maritime Festival, demonstrating how this extraordinary eighteenth-century diving suit may have worked beneath the surface.
