The Story
Every Merchant House Was Known by Its Table
In the nineteenth century, the merchant houses of Raahe were places of business, family life and hospitality.
Ships carried goods and ideas between Raahe and distant ports, but visitors arriving at the merchant house were welcomed not in an office, but around the table.
The quality of the household could be seen in the way guests were received. Food was prepared according to the season, the table was carefully laid and conversation continued long into the evening.
At Langin Kauppahuone, that tradition of hospitality is still alive.
The Lady of the House Dinner invites you to take your place at the table and experience the merchant house not as a museum, but as a guest.

Be Welcomed as a Guest
The evening begins when the Lady of the House welcomes you into the historic rooms of Langin Kauppahuone. Candlelight, seasonal table settings and carefully restored interiors create the setting, but the experience is not a performance.
There is no stage.
Instead, stories emerge naturally around the table as dinner is served.
The Lady of the House introduces you to the people who once lived here, the traditions of the merchant household and everyday life in nineteenth-century Old Raahe. Food, conversation and history become part of the same evening.

The Lady of the House Dinner follows the same principle.
The menu is inspired by an 1840s manor dinner and the culinary traditions of merchant families on Finland’s northern coast, interpreted for today’s table.
Ingredients and dishes vary according to the season, allowing each dinner to reflect the time of year.
Rather than recreating history course by course, the dinner carries its traditions forward through flavours, ingredients and the way food is shared around the table.

Old Raahe was once one of Finland’s important merchant and seafaring towns. Its wealth, ideas and influences travelled through the harbour and into the homes surrounding it.
Today, many of those wooden houses remain.
