Life in a merchant house was not lived only in its grand rooms. Behind the business of merchants, shipowners and visiting traders was a busy household, kept running by the people who worked and lived there.

At Lang, the merchant conducted business in a corner room of the main house. Visitors were first received by the bookkeeper before being shown into the merchant’s office. But another lively heart of the household could be found across the courtyard: Väentupa, the servants’ quarters.

The original Väentupa once stood in a courtyard building that has since disappeared. Today’s room brings its story back to life, combining the more dignified atmosphere of the merchant’s office with the warmth and simplicity of the servants’ living quarters.

During the restoration of the merchant’s former office, traces of its original wall colour were discovered beneath later layers of paint. That historic shade became the inspiration for the walls of today’s Väentupa. The room also preserves another remarkable detail: an original painted ceiling, a quiet reminder of the craftsmanship and interiors of the old merchant house.

Väentupa consists of two connected spaces, making it particularly well suited to families. The bedroom has a double bed beneath the painted ceiling, while an antique fold-out bed offers a charming sleeping place for a child. In the adjoining room, the sofa can be converted into a comfortable double bed for two more guests.

With the doors between the rooms left open, Väentupa becomes a cosy family space in which old stories and everyday comfort meet.

Here, it is easy to imagine the life that once filled this merchant house — the footsteps across the courtyard, the work of the household and the people whose everyday lives were an essential part of the House of Lang.
