MERCHANT HOUSE ROOMS
Meet the People Who Still Welcome Guests
Each room at Langin Kauppahuone opens a door into the history of the House of Lang. Inspired by real people — and, in one case, a character created from historical sources — the rooms are designed around a particular person, period and moment in the life of the merchant house.
Choose your room, and discover which story becomes part of your stay.
Johan Lang’s RoomThe Merchant Who Looked to the World
Johan Lang built one of northern Finland’s great merchant houses and sent his ships far beyond Raahe. His room reflects the world of a practical and determined merchant who watched the life of the market square from his window while building a business connected to distant ports.
Johanna Franzen’s RoomA Merchant Daughter’s World
Johanna, Johan Lang’s daughter, connects the Lang family with the generation of Franzéns who followed. Her room draws on her own estate inventory and the surviving decorative details of the house to evoke the restrained elegance of her life in the merchant family.
Jenny Sovelius’s RoomA Young Lady of the Merchant House
Jenny Franzén moved into the Lang merchant house with her husband Fredrik Sovelius as a young wife and mother. Her elegant room reflects the international tastes of prosperous merchant families — and the hopes of a life that was to be tragically short.
Shop Maid Anna’s RoomEveryday Life Behind the Counter
Anna is a character created from historical sources to represent the young women who worked in merchant-house shops in the 19th century. Her simple, beautiful room imagines the everyday world behind the grander stories of ships and fortunes — work, customers, letters home and life just beside the shop.
Historic Houses
Live Inside Old Raahe
For guests who want more space, privacy and time to settle in, Lang Historic Houses offer the chance to make a carefully restored wooden house in Old Raahe your home for a while.
Stay together under one roof, surrounded by the character of an old house and the everyday life of the historic town just outside your door. Each house has its own story, atmosphere and connection to the world of Old Raahe.
Captain Himanka’s HouseJust next door to Langin Kauppahuone stands a historic wooden house known in Raahe as Captain Himanka’s House.
Named after sea captain Johan Himanka (1858–1929), the house carries a story from the golden age of Raahe’s sailing ships. Himanka captained the barque Altai when it was shipwrecked off Madagascar in 1901 — an extraordinary voyage that became part of local maritime lore.
Today, the house offers a peaceful place to make your own in the heart of Old Raahe. The private apartment accommodates 1–4 guests and includes its own kitchen, while breakfast awaits next door at Langin Kauppahuone.
