Come inside from the northern winter.
Christmas trees, traditional ornaments and candlelight fill the historic rooms. Finnish Christmas music plays softly and the table has been prepared for the evening.
But this is more than a beautiful Christmas setting.
Throughout the evening, the people and traditions of the merchant house begin to emerge.
Johanna, the Lady of the House, shares stories of Christmas celebrations in a nineteenth-century merchant family.
Anna takes you behind the scenes, into the days of preparations that were needed before the household could finally settle down for Christmas.
Around them, food is served, stories are shared and Christmas Eve unfolds.

Then comes one of the most anticipated moments of Finnish Christmas Eve.
Santa Claus comes to the house.
In Finland, children traditionally do not travel somewhere to meet Santa on Christmas Eve.
Santa comes to them.
He steps through the door, greets the family and spends a moment with those gathered inside.

In many countries, Santa Claus arrives while everyone is asleep.
Finnish children have traditionally had a rather more exciting arrangement.
Santa may knock on the door and ask the most important question of the evening:
“Are there any well-behaved children here?”
So when the evening grows quieter, keep an ear open.
